What does a ChatGPT tracking tool do?
A ChatGPT tracking tool asks ChatGPT the questions your buyers might ask, on a schedule, and stores each answer. In every answer it checks four things: was your brand named, in which position, who was named instead, and which pages the answer cited.
It differs from search rank tracking in one way: ChatGPT has no fixed ranking. Ask the same question twice and the answer can change. So these tools do not rely on one answer; they report the mention rate across many questions and over time.

Why is asking ChatGPT by hand not enough?
Asking by hand is free, but it misleads in three ways. First, the answer changes every time. In SparkToro's research, two answers to the same question produced the same list of brands less than one time in a hundred.
Second, when you ask from your own account, ChatGPT can take your past conversations and location into account. Your customer does not see the same answer.
Third, a hand-typed answer is not stored. You cannot compare where you stood last month, which competitor is new, or which source dropped out.

What should you check in a ChatGPT tracker?

- Is the question asked with web search on? Cited pages only appear then.
- Can you read the full answer, or do you only get a score?
- Do you write the prompts, or does the tool pick them? Can you approve them?
- Is tracking daily or weekly? This drives the price more than anything else.
